Monday 14th January - Bristol Stakeholder Event

The first LCCP-supported event in Bristol, which is helping to produce the next phase of Bristol's Climate Protection and Sustainable Energy Strategy Action Plan by widening engagement throughout the city, refreshing strategic elements of the 2004/06 plan and supporting implementation of priority carbon reduction activities.  The meeting was attended by a good cross-section of city stakeholders, and the outputs are now being taken forward by the city as part of their Green Capital Initiative.

Bristol is now working with the LCCP team to develop an action planning workshop where public sector stakeholders can identify carbon reduction actions and opportunities for working together.  Also in development, is a series of information sessions on key topics of interest to Bristol stakeholders.

Following on from the stakeholder event in January and a "state of play" audit of activity towards carbon reduction in the city, the project team identified a number of topics of interest to stakeholders.

Workshops were created to:

  • Provide an introduction to each topic.
  • Enable delegates to share their experiences in this area.
  • Highlight good practice in Bristol and elsewhere.
  • Explore the opportunities and benefits from joint citywide working.

These workshops were run over two days in April and May 2008. Around 100 delegates from across the public, private and voluntary sector attended their choice of workshops on:

  • Green ICT - with more and more technology entering our workplaces, schools and homes, what are the opportunities for reducing its environmental impact?
  • Energy management – a roundtable discussion among Bristol’s energy managers
  • Communicating with the public - the latest marketing and communications research related to climate change and practical action being taken locally.
  • Sustainable procurement - how organisations are reducing the environmental impact of the goods and services they buy and use.
  • Carbon footprinting - the principles of carbon footprinting and a demonstration of the Low Carbon Cities Carbon Calculator.
  • Communicating with and engaging staff - the challenges, lessons and benefits of engaging staff and stakeholders in activities to reduce carbon emissions.

These interactive and energetic sessions generated plenty of actions for delegates to take forward in their own organisations, as well as a series of recommendations for citywide structures and activities to drive carbon reduction across Bristol.
